Brock university celebrated the arrival to campus of a four-metre-tall statue of namesake Sir Isaac Brock in mid-March. Brock was a major-general in the British Army and hero of the War of 1812 who died in battle not far from the current campus location.

The 1.5-tonne bronze sculpture, by Canadian artist Danek Mozdzenski, was cast at a foundry in Oregon and transported the 4,000 kilometres to the Brock campus on a flatbed truck. The circuitous journey was complicated by the fact that the statue’s height meant its route had to be carefully coordinated to avoid any low overpasses along the way. The university kept an online diary of the statue’s pro-gress during the five-day trip.

The artwork was made possible thanks to a $1-million gift from the late David Howes, a former chair of Brock’s board of trustees. Mr. Howes died only weeks before the statue was installed. A formal installation ceremony to commemorate the statue and to honour Mr. Howes took place on May 14.
