The University of Victoria has reappointed David Capson dean of the faculty of graduate studies, with a five-year term beginning July 1. Dr. Capson holds a PhD in engineering from McMaster University. His research interests include computational vision and vision-based applications in robotics.
Vancouver Island University has named Nicole Vaugeois associate vice-president of scholarship, research and creative activity, as of Jan. 5. Dr. Vaugeois was previously awarded the Provost Award of Excellence in Teaching and Learning at Vancouver Island University, and was named World Leisure International Scholar in 2000.
Tony Vannelli will become University of Saskatchewan’s provost and vice-president, academic, starting Aug. 1. Previously, Dr. Vannelli was the chair of the department of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Waterloo, and later served as associate dean of research and external partnerships. He recently completed a second five-year term as dean of the College of Physical and Engineering Science at the University of Guelph.
Maureen MacDonald has been named dean of science at McMaster University, effective May 1. Dr. MacDonald is currently director of McMaster’s school of interdisciplinary science. An expert in cardiovascular health, exercise physiology, spinal cord injury and aging, her research explores the effectiveness of exercise as a way of preventing illness. She holds a PhD in kinesiology from the University of Waterloo.
McGill University has named Louis Arseneault its new vice-principal, communications and external relations, effective Feb. 1. Mr. Arseneault’s previous roles include vice-president, talent attraction, promotion and communications, and communications director at Montréal International, and assistant director of public affairs at CAA-Québec. He holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from Université du Québec à Montréal and a master’s in sociology from Université Paris VII.
The University of Regina has appointed Douglas Farenick dean of science, effective July 1, after he served in the role on an interim basis. Dr. Farenick is a researcher in pure mathematics and holds a PhD from the University of Toronto. At the U of Regina he has served as assistant dean, research, and head of the department of mathematics and statistics.
The University of Ontario Institute of Technology has appointed Akira Tokuhiro dean of the faculty of energy systems and nuclear science, effective March 15. Dr. Tokuhiro will join UOIT from NuScale Power LCC, a nuclear energy start-up company in Corvallis, Oregon, where he was senior principal engineer. He holds a PhD in nuclear engineering from Purdue University and was a professor and director of nuclear engineering at the University of Idaho from 2007 to 2014.
In January, Jonathan Withey took on the role of Mount Royal University’s dean of the faculty of science and technology. Dr. Withey is an organic chemist who was a faculty member at MacEwan University since 2004, most recently serving as chair of the department of physical sciences. He completed his undergraduate and graduate studies in chemistry at the University of Oxford.
Brad Mahon has been appointed director of the Mount Royal University Conservatory. Dr. Mahon has taught at the conservatory on a part-time basis over the past 19 years and has held senior roles with the Medicine Hat College Conservatory of Music and Dance and the Conservatory of Performing Arts at the University of Regina. He holds a PhD in musicology from the University of Calgary.
Serge Demers has been named associate vice-president, learning and teaching, at Laurentian University. His new role will encompass his capacity as registrar and secretary of senate until the end of his current term on June 30, 2019. Dr. Demers has been teaching at the university level for almost 20 years and previously taught in high schools in Northern Alberta and Northern Ontario. He was formerly director of the École des sciences de l’éducation at Laurentian and chair of the Ontario Association of Deans of Education.
The University of Winnipeg has appointed Michael Emslie its next vice-president, finance and administration. Mr. Emslie, a chartered professional accountant, joined the university as director of audit and risk management in 2007, and has been a member of the executive team since 2011. He has also worked as a senior audit consultant at the University of Manitoba, where he earned a bachelor of commerce.
On Feb. 1, Carrie Bourassa became the scientific director of the Institute of Aboriginal Peoples’ Health, one of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. A Métis scholar, she has spent the past 15 years as a professor of indigenous health studies at the First Nations University of Canada. Dr. Bourassa, who completed a PhD in social studies at the University of Regina, researches the impacts of colonization on the health of indigenous peoples and the need to deliver culturally safe care. She is a member of the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists of the Royal Society of Canada and a public member of the Royal College Council of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. In 2012, Dr. Bourassa received the Wiichihiwayshinawn Foundation Inc. Métis Award in Health and Science. In her new role, she will work with the indigenous health research community and stakeholders to help implement CIHR’s new 10-point plan to “Build a healthier future for indigenous peoples.”
Royal Roads University has appointed Cheryl Eason its vice-president and chief financial officer, effective Feb. 27. Ms. Eason was chief financial officer of the California Public Employees’ Retirement System, the largest public pension fund in the United States. An alumna of Royal Roads, Ms. Eason’s previous roles include executive positions at the BC Pension Corporation and Manitoba Lotteries Corporation.
Eugene Fiume has been appointed Simon Fraser University’s new dean of applied sciences. Dr. Fiume is joining SFU from the University of Toronto, where he was a computing science professor and the inaugural director of U of T’s master’s program in applied computing. In addition, Dr. Fiume received $6 million in funding to create a Centre for Collaborative Interactive Digital Media at the U of T.
Mount Allison University’s next provost and vice-president, academic and research, is Jeff Ollerhead. Dr. Ollerhead is currently a professor and director of the university’s Coastal Wetlands Institute. He has accepted a two-year appointment beginning July 1, after serving in the position on an interim basis. Dr. Ollerhead joined Mount Allison in 1994 as an assistant geography professor and is a three-time recipient of the Paul Paré Excellence Award.
Scott Gillies has been named associate university librarian at Wilfrid Laurier University, effective Feb. 1. Mr. Gillies holds a master’s degree in library and information studies from Western University and a master of arts in history from Queen’s University. He has 16 years of experience as a professional librarian at the University of Guelph, most recently serving as head of information resources and collections.
