SIFE Memorial, a student-run organization at Memorial University, won the 2012 Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) National Championships in Calgary this past May, defeating 50 other teams from universities across Canada. It’s the sixth time in seven years that SIFE Memorial took top honours in the national student business competition. The team now advances to represent Canada at the 2012 SIFE World Cup in Washington, D.C. in September. SIFE Memorial won the World Cup in 2008.

Among the initiatives the SIFE Memorial team presented this year was a project to help soon-to-be-retired Canadian Forces personnel to become entrepreneurs. “We could not be prouder to represent our country and tell these stories to an international audience,” says Danielle Seward, SIFE Memorial vice-president, who graduated with a joint bachelor of commerce and bachelor of arts degree in May.

SIFE is an international non-profit organization headquartered in the U.S. According to its website, the organization “works with leaders in business and higher education to mobilize university students to make a difference in their communities while developing the skills to become socially responsible business leaders.” There are teams at 1,600 universities worldwide.
