Welcome to our redesigned website for University Affairs

BY PEGGY BERKOWITZ | DEC 03 2014

We refreshed the design, improved the navigation and, most importantly, designed the site to display well on all devices, from a smartphone to a desktop computer, to keep up with our readers.

In addition to a look that more closely mirrors the design of UA magazine, regular readers will notice a few changes. Our navigation tools are now located horizontally along the top of every page:

ua_nav

Clicking on a section heading – News, Opinion, Features, Search Jobs and the like – will take you to a landing page for that section.

ua_opinion_landing

Hovering over the section heading in the navigation will show all the sub-sections – for example Opinion is home to our regular columnists and opinion bloggers as well as the “In my opinion” articles by guest writers. (Our bloggers writing about academic careers are under the “Career advice” section.)

So that you don’t miss anything by your favourite columnists, the columnists are displayed at the bottom of the homepage as well.

We have two brand new sections: Multimedia – home to our growing library of podcasts and videos – and Magazine, which takes you to a page with the table of contents for the latest print issue as well as links to the digital editions going back to February 2010.

On your smartphone, you may access a text-only navigation, by clicking on the three bars (or the “hamburger”) at the top right of your smartphone screen.

Finally, since a great deal of UA editorial content exists in both French and English, we’ve added a toggle switch in the upper right corner – just above the “share on social media” buttons – that will bring you to the same story in the other language (or in some cases, a summary of the article in the other language). When the story exists in just one language, the toggle switch will direct you to the French (“Accueil Français”) or English homepage.

Our website’s elegant design was created by Underline Studio, the Toronto-based company that designs our print magazine. Our in-house team included Jeanne Thibault and Xavier Van de Maele, AUCC’s web manager and web developer, respectively; Judith Lacerte, AUCC designer; and Tara Siebarth, UA’s web editor, who kept the project on track for the better part of a year. We hope you like the changes. Let us know by posting a comment to this page.
