Tanya (Toni) De Mello became vice-president, equity and community inclusion, at Toronto Metropolitan University on Jan. 1, 2023. Dr. De Mello previously served as the inaugural assistant dean for student programming, development and equity at TMU’s Lincoln Alexander School of Law. She joined the university in 2017 as director of human rights. Dr. De Mello is a human rights lawyer, mediator and coach with expertise in discrimination, harassment, and sexual violence, with a focus on the postsecondary sector. She holds bachelor degrees in economics and political science from the University of Waterloo; a dual master’s degree in public policy and urban and regional planning from Princeton University; a master of education in counselling and psychotherapy from the University of Toronto and two law degrees (common and civil law) from McGill University. In 2020, she completed her PhD at the University of Toronto, which focused on access to the legal sector in Toronto and bias in hiring.

The University of Winnipeg has announced that Navinder Basra will serve as vice-president, finance and administration, effective Jan. 16, 2023. Mr. Basra has over 10 years of experience in senior financial roles, most recently as acting CFO and secretary treasurer for the Winnipeg School Division. Mr. Basra is a chartered professional accountant and a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountants.

Glenn Craney has been named Toronto Metropolitan University’s inaugural chief strategy officer, where he will work with the executive team to combine the university’s various institutional plans into a pan-university strategy. Mr. Craney joined TMU in 2018 as deputy provost and vice-provost, university planning office, which will be folded into the new chief strategy office. Prior to TMU, he served as assistant deputy minister of postsecondary education for the Government of Ontario.

On Jan. 1, Mary-Louise Vanderlee assumed the role of interim dean in the faculty of education at Brock University. Dr. Vanderlee is a professor and the associate dean of professional and undergraduate studies at Brock. She has previously chaired the department of graduate and undergraduate studies and the department of educational studies.
