St. Francis Xavier University, one of Canada’s leading primarily undergraduate universities, is seeking a Dean for the Faculty of Science, with appointment expected July 1, 2019. Located in picturesque Antigonish, Nova Scotia, StFX prides itself on the excellence of its teaching and research, the success of its graduates, and its strong commitment to community development and social justice. The University offers an intimate learning environment and a curriculum that encompasses the Faculties of Science, Arts, Education, and Business. 200 Faculty members are providing over 4000 students from across Canada and around the world with a post-secondary education conducive to intellectual and personal growth.
The Faculty of Science offers programs in the core Sciences including Bachelor of Science degrees in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science, and Physics; in professional programs including Nursing, Human Kinetics (BA, BSc), Engineering, and Human Nutrition; and, interdisciplinary programs including Aquatic Resources, and combined Bachelor of Arts and Science degrees in Health, and Climate and Environment.
StFX has a strong commitment to research in the sciences and supports Master of Science programs in several departments. The university has consistently been a leader among Canada’s primarily undergraduate universities in both total NSERC funding and proportion of grant-holding faculty. The University has received significant funding through the CFI and AIF programs and it operates a multi-institutional graduate NSERC CREATE program in Climate Sciences.
The position of Dean of Science requires strong, collegial leadership, administrative abilities, and a proven record of scholarship. We seek an individual with demonstrated interpersonal skills who is able to interact with students, faculty, and senior administrators; someone who will encourage and promote the development of innovative strategies to maintain our current excellence in teaching and research; and who will enthusiastically pursue new opportunities. A keen awareness of the diverse nature of pure, interdisciplinary, and applied sciences is essential to advance key components of the Faculty’s Strategic Plan, spanning teaching excellence and innovative program development, engaging undergraduates in research and collaborative partnership development, and infrastructure and equipment renewal. The successful individual must also lead efforts in the recruitment and retention of faculty and students.
The normal term of appointment is six years and can be renewable. St. Francis Xavier University is committed to the principles of employment equity.
