Long-time research administrator well-known in Canadian university community.

BY PEGGY BERKOWITZ | MAR 26 2012

The U-15 Group of Canadian Research Universities appointed Suzanne Corbeil as its first executive director. Her mandate includes developing a more formal association of the members and advocating for stronger partnerships among universities, government and other research stakeholders. The appointment took effect March 5 for a five-year term and will be based in Ottawa.

Suzanne Corbeil has worked as a consultant to research institutions since 2009, including acting as director of global outreach for the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. Before that, she was vice-president, external relations and communications, at the Canada Foundation for Innovation from 2000 to 2009. She has held positions with the Ontario government and the Canadian Intergovernmental Conference Secretariat.

The U-15 represents the executive heads of 15 of Canada’s most research-intensive universities, who are also members of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada. The two associations work together closely and will continue to do so under Ms. Corbeil’s leadership. The U-15 develops shared strategies among its members and provides a coordinated voice on issues including funding, research, accountability, public policy and partnerships. It was formed in 1991 as the Group of Ten, or G10, and expanded to become the G-13, and then the U-15 in 2011.
